January 31, 2006 - Bishop's Lounge - Northampton, MA - Henning Alone Show - with: Lesa Bezo and Marty Helly | |
Henning says: A couple nights ago on Tuesday, Lesa Bezo had a solo show at Bishop's Lounge. Since she has access to a couple amazing musician's she decided to turn the majority of her show into a trio with Ken and Brian. The three of them were dressed to the nines. Suits and ties and skirts. Their fancy looked matched the swank setting of Bishop's and also the new lounge sound of their arrangements. Ken had brought along his superhero keyboard and flushed out the songs with beautiful mellow electric pianos and organs and Brian was tapping on the drummy drums with light sticks while Lesa strummed gently on her electric guitar. It was a delight! It also turned out that the musician that was supposed to follow The Bezo Band had to cancel, so Marty (the booker, organizer, thrid act) asked if I would mind playing a few songs. This time I happily agreed. (On Sunday Matt Hebert had asked if I wanted to play a couple songs at The Basement, but I wasn't in the right mood for it, so I declined, which is very difficult.) I played some songs alone, including the debut of a new one called Sarah Says. I kind of messed it up, but it was nice to see what it sounded like in a real live setting instead of on the sofa. Then Ken came up and played keyboard with me. It was great fun. I recall playing, This Time It Looks Good, Day Job, The Whichita Train Whistle Sings, Candy Cane, 1,000 Times, and Omnivore, though, I think we did others, too. The defining underlying theme of the evening was the fact that the State of the Union address was going on at the same time. That meant that a large group of people were in the other room at Bishop's playing a Bingo/Drinking Game based on the George Bush's speech. I don't know, maybe you had to do a shot everytime he said the words "freedom" or "terror" or "steadfast resolve". Anyway, it was apparent that people were having fun next door. It was also very apparent that the president has become nothing more than a goofy predictable joke in the minds of lots of folks. Isn't it funny when it seems like the sane performance is coming from the musicians and the outlandish one is coming from the president? It's was so funny that I tore my legs off and threw them into the street.
