July 12 , 2005 - The Space - Hamden, CT- Henning Solo with: Gerlinda Grimes | |
Henning says: After a stint of kind of crappy shows, which was followed by a period of disinterest in performing, I am now back in the swing. My show last night at The Space in Hamden, CT, renewed my faith in music and people. My half hour slot was from 8:30 to 9:00. I was one of the featured performers at their open mic. At first, I sat in one of the plush chairs and instant messaged with Herb while Space employees and volunteers were setting up. The room was bustling with activity, like I suppose it does almost every night. It felt like I had shown up early to someone’s house and they were still preparing for the upcoming party. The first three performers in the open mic seemed to be below the age of 16. What was I doing here? Just about everyone who plays at the Space open mic has an excellent singing voice. What was I doing here? Suddenly, Steve (one of the owners) told me I was next. I had lost track of the time and quickly ran up to the green room to retrieve my guitar and tune it. Back on the stage, Steve introduced me with some kind words and reminded the audience that 1.) The Space has a no-talking-during-performances rule and 2.) the best and most comfortable seats were right up front. People grew quiet and moved forward and as I stopped for a second to consider which song to start with, the room was deafeningly silent. Amazing. I played: Something's Taking Over, You Want This Too, Periscope, Journal of Lies, The Title Song, Back to School, and Waiting for Life. The audience was very receptive. They laughed in the right places, they applauded enthusiastically. I could hear myself very well. I was feeling confident and at-ease. When I finished, I grabbed my guitar with the intentions of bringing it back up to the green room and taking a moment out of the eye-beams of the crowd, but I didn't make it passed the merchandise table where there were already some people waiting to buy The New You and T-Shirts. During this time, the Space staff was also passing around a hat for me. I sold a few discs and tee-shirts and talked to a bunch of very nice people. I had forgotten to put out a mailing list, but some folks asked for it anyway. One nice girl handed me a temporary tattoo with a note on the back that said, "I really liked your music and I'm giving you this temporary tattoo to prove it." Gerlinda Grimes, of the Atlanta band Weak Lazy Liar, was the other featured performer. She sang nice gentle songs with a smooth voice. We talked a little, she was very nice. She had heard of School for the Dead for some reason. (you can read her take on the night right here.) I spoke some to Chris and Steve of The Space. Both of them have such enthusiastic attitudes about all things music. It's contagious and it rode with me all the way home.
